Alaskans Against Palin

By Hassan Chop

A Bloomberg news article highlights the fact that some of Palin’s Alaskan supporters, as well as the state’s major newspapers, don’t think she’s ready to be a heartbeat away from the presidency:

“She’s not qualified, she doesn’t have the judgment, to be next in line to the president of the United States,” Larry Persily, who until June worked in the governor’s Washington office as a congressional liaison, said in a phone interview.

A supporter of Palin’s campaign for governor, Jim Whitaker, the Republican mayor of Fairbanks, also questioned Palin’s readiness to serve as vice president.

“Most people would acknowledge that, regardless of her charm and good intentions, Palin is not ready for the top job,” the Fairbanks News-Miner newspaper wrote in an Aug. 29 editorial. “McCain seems to have put his political interests ahead of the nation’s when he created the possibility that she might fill it.”

The Anchorage Daily News, the state’s largest paper, noted in an editorial that Palin is enmeshed in a legislative investigation of her July 11 firing of the state’s public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan. He has since asserted that he received pressure from Palin’s family and administration to fire a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce from Palin’s sister.

Has anyone noticed that Pailin has been kept far away from talking to reporters? Unless she gets a script to read, she appears to be a lap dog? If she’s as good as the GOP advertises, what are they afraid of? Have any major media been requesting interviews? If not, that is the story. Let’s see what she has, and I do not mean Fox ews or Billo.

  2. J. Goodwin Says:

McCain is pandering to women and here is one who won’t fall for it! I haven’t read anything yet that convinces me she is just another pretty face.

  3. Jayne Says:

In response to Jeff Paulson’s comment:
I sure don’t see anyone asking what Obama is afraid of. He has been giving speeches and refusing to answer to the people or the press for over 18 months. It’s interesting that partisan hacks are asking about Palin’s lack of press access considering she was just named McCain’s running mate three days ago.

  4. Eddie Says:

You know, I am really troubled by some of the negatives I am reading about Gov. Palin, unrelated to her lack of experience. I am really concerned about her credibility which I think is an important ingredient for any leader.

  5. F.LLANA Says:

Firing the states Public Safety Commissioner because he wouldn’t fire a State trooper divorcing her sister? Sounds like Palin fits right in with the Bush modus operandi and all good Rethuglican followers.

  6. Irv Says:

It should be expected that Palin, who effectively challenged the entrenched and possible corrupt GOP in Alaska would get less than full support. I don’t know Alaska politics, but if true to most areas. the press is too often in bed with the controlling powers. Also, note that most of the press critics are men. This raises an interesting question. Is a woman with young children and still of childbearing age capable of being President of the US? Or, does the double standard prevail?

HOW CAN SHE TELL SHE IS A CHRISTIAN?????
WHEN SHE TAKES UP A GUN AND KILLS ANIMALS (THOU SHALL NOT KILL) AND EAT THEM AND LIKES HEAVY METAL WHICH IS SATANICAL MUSIC !!!!
HOW CAN SHE SAY SHE IS A CHRISTIAN FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE!!!!

A LEADER SHOULD BE THE RIGHT EXAMPLE FOR THE PEOPLE.
SO, CAN SHE BE THE RIGHT EXAMPLE, HAVING A 17 -YEAR- YOUNG PREGNANT DAUGHTER ?

  10. Hassan Chop Says:

@ Jeff: I think she will eventually sit down with journalists and news anchors and answer questions on her own. Right after the announcement, she went on the trail with McCain. My guess is that journalists are digging up as much information as they can — she was a surprise pick, after all — before they sit down with her. She can’t go through the next two months without doing any solo interviews.

@ Jayne: Obama has refused to answer to the people or the press? He’s only had dozens of sit-down interviews with reporters in the last year. He’s appeared on major networks and done interviews. I’m not sure how you can make that kind of a statement. His policies are out there for everyone to judge. Like them or hate them, it’s difficult to suggest that he hasn’t been thoroughly vetted by the press.

@Irv: I agree with you that some in the Alaska GOP are hitting Palin because they weren’t all too pleased losing races to her or having her call them out for corruption. But, as far as I know, the two individuals mentioned in the Bloomberg story don’t have any kind of beef with her on that front, and one supported her for Governor. The two Alaskan papers may have their own editorial slant, but those editors actually know her a lot better than the folks at the Washington Post or New York Times.

I am a Canadian wacthing US politics with awes and disbelief. Anyone arguing that being the mayor of Ottawa (Capital city of Canada with a population of 1 million) is qualified to serve as Prime Minister of Canada would get laughed out of town here. How can anyone think being a mayor of such tiny town, or governor of a State of less than 700,000 people can qualify someone to serve as VP or eventually President of the mighty USA - the most powerful country on the face of the earth and the only remaining superpower!!! Sarah Palin didn’t even have a passport a year ago and had not even seen any part of the world (beside having visited Alaska’s National Guards in Kowait and Iraq). Gee! That’s the “worldview” of the next leader of the free world? You are becoming a laughing stock in the rest of the world! Wake up, neighbor!

  14. Jennifer Says:

I am appalled at all the negatives mentioned about her since Sarah Palin got chosen as Vice-President. It is just amazing to me considering how Obama has been the media’s darling for so long and the reporters are not investigating nor reporting on the many questions and lack of experience he brings to his candidacy.

  15. Rusty Says:

Palin might be the perfect model of a mother (not so sure this is true) but you’re missing the point. She has no experience in foreign policy, said herself she doesn’t know anything about the Iraq war. Personally, that scares me and makes me wonder what John McCain was thinking. It’s been three days and I still am reeling from his decision.

  16. Raven Says:

I guess what surprised me is that if anyone asks a Republican spokesperson the question:
Is Sarah Palin the most qualified Republican woman for the Vice-President position? The response is a stunned silence and then, “I am offended by the sexism of your question. She is a woman. She has qualifications.” First of all it would be sexist NOT to ask about her qualifications. And lovely, intelligent and filled with potential as she may be…she has not had enough time as governor to even experience the results of her policies. How many candidates say “I balanced my state’s budget.” Only to find out two, three years down the road the state is in ruins.

  17. djo Says:

come on america - we have sons/daughters dying in iraq - still getting deployed over and over yet Palin hasn’t paid much attention to the war - how sad is that! international experience? my son’s life possibly in her hands - god help us -

  18. Yoly Says:

I agree–but don’t mistake her for a good mom. Who will tend her 4 month old down syndrome baby while she furthers her own ambitious political agenda? And she never taught her daughter about birth control, apparently.

  19. Hassan Chop Says:

To be fair, I don’t think there’s any reason to question whether or not she’s a good mom. You could make the same case against Obama and his two young daughters. Trig likely require more care than Obama’s daughters, but there’s nothing to suggest that she and her family can’t handle the responsibilty. Plenty of politicians seeking office have young children.

  20. B Gilbert Says:

Women don’t really want a strong woman to succeed. We say we want a woman to run… but once a strong woman starts playing with the Big Boys… we say Oh - looks how she has changed., how can she be a “Good” mom, Oh look she can’t raise her own daughter.

    America stop being so fickle…

I say Sarah Palin go for it!

  21. s denver Says:

With all due respect, how about saying, “Listen John, now is not a good time for me ; I have a three month old baby and a teenage daughter who needs me. Maybe in 4-8 years.”

But, oh no, I can do it all.
And, this is a liberal person responding.

  22. Janice Says:

I just want to know why: Why does Sarah P. not look pregnant in any of the pictures or videos when she is supposedly 7-8 months pregnant? Why was her daughter absent from school for 5-8 months during this time? WHy no one in the Alaskan Legislature knew Sarah Palin was supposedly pregnant until she announced it after 7 months. Why, when Sarah was 7 months pregnant, didnt anyone from ALASKA HDTV, who were filming her hiking in Juneau in heels, why wasnt the pregnancy obvious to any of them? WHy, after starting contractions and leaking amniotic fluid, a month early in Tennesee, did she fly 4000 miles and 22 hours later to check into a hospital in Alaska? Especially since she said she knew ahead of time the child had a disorder, is that good judgment I wonder? She passed up several hospitals equipped with neonatal intensive care units (NCIU). Mat-Su Regional, the hospital where Trig Palin was delivered, amazingly does not list Trig on their own list of babies born in that facility for that day of April 18th. A peculiar oddity? IF this is true, in itself there is nothing wrong with it I guess except for the fact that there was this thing called a BIG LIE to America, perhaps?

  23. doc Says:

i honestly think you all are trying your best to find the smallest flaw just to give yourself justification. As it stands everyone already can agree any pair would be better than the two that are currently in office. Mccain could have chosen pretty much anyone in his party to be his running mate but instead he picked some one fresh, someone new, i think that in itself shows he is commited in trying to balance his spread sheet. If her daughter was the one running for VP id say yeah, i want some info… the fact is she isnt. Anyone with teenagers can attest how hard it is to keep them out of trouble with as much sex and violence they are compounded with daily TV, Radio, peir-pressure, And you can only watch them for so long durring a days time. what her daughter has done has no meaning in this election.

  29. carol Says:

I am suprised that women have supported Governor Palin so quickly. It seems that any woman with children and a government job is qualified to be vice president. Women feel they can relate to her because she has managed to have a career and family. Well, I can’t relate because I am a black woman with a career and family. The president and vice president are supposed to represent me also. When they talked about representing all middle america and small towns at the convention, I noticed that there were only a few blacks in the audience. ISimilar to the 3% black population Governor Palin represents in Alaska.

  35. Anonymous Says:

    Amy,

I’d point you to this factcheck.org piece on Palin that talks about what she did with respect to special needs funding. I have no idea what she will do in office, if McCain wins, but this piece flatly states that she did not cut special needs funding as the governor of Alaska. She actually increased funding. Part of the reason that she was able to do that was because Alaska is running a budget surplus thanks to high oil and gas prices.

I am a die-hard feminist and working mom, and I want someone smarter than I am as VP, not someone who can’t name a newspaper she reads, who has no sense of foreign policy, and who can’t complete a sentence. 40. Jaylah Says:

I think the Palin is not only unaware of the reality of the United States, but she doesn’t even understand what her duty would be if, for some reason beyond comprehension, she was the vice president. She is a pawn in a sick game created by McCain to try to rope women in. They are both decievers and I do not understand how Palin can believe that she has any morals left. Her so called “Christianity” is a little warped. Using a child that is diagnosed with down syndrome, and a pregnant daughter as apawn and a base to stant upon!! Does that make her qualified?? How does that make her any better than any other mother that has a similar situation? She is tyring to corrupt and destroy beautiful things and thinks she is right by doing so. Governor Palin is not getting my vote!

  41. Jaylah Says:

When Palin learns any bit of knowledge, then she may be worth my time of keeping up with the McCain campaign.
