British photographer Tim Hetherington won the 51st WPP Contest with this photo of a US soldier in Afghanistan. From the contest website:
The picture was taken 16 September 2007 and shows a US soldier resting at “Restrepo” bunker, named after a soldier from his platoon who was recently killed by insurgents.
The 2nd Battalion Airborne of the 503rd US infantry is undergoing a deployment in the Korengal Valley in the Eastern province of Afghanistan. The valley is infamous as the site of downing of a US helicopter and has seen some of the most intense fighting in the country. Hetherington’s photograph is part of a picture story that was also awarded 2nd Prize in General News Stories. He had traveled to Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair.
“This image shows the exhaustion of a man - and the exhaustion of a nation,”
says jury chairman Gary Knight, and adds “We’re all connected to this. It’s a picture of a man at the end of a line.” Fellow juror MaryAnne Golon commented: “I use all my energy to have people notice bad things. There’s a human quality to this picture. It says that conflict is the basis of this man’s life.”

What a shot! His stuff for VF was amazing. I should’ve handicapped it for the finals. Junger’s piece wasn’t nearly as good as Jon Lee’s Afghan story, but still worth reading, you’re right Jeff. But here’s THE AFghan piece of the entire war:

USE YOUR SUPREME POWER OF THINKING & DISCUSSIONS WITH OTHERS
TO SAVE CHILDREN & ONE WORLD / BEST WORLD
In INDIA Hindu, Muslims, Christians, Punjabi etc. or all castes are there and females are there in all castes. I think in all countries the same thing should be there and one-way of truth / good EDUCATION to all the children in childhood / before marriage. Now, how you will differentiate between male / female, who is in which caste and Guru (Religious Educator) should explain to save children in schools. What is castes / nationalizations / national resident / outsiders and everybody should think to save children. Is a name or a photo / all photos can differentiate the castes??? How to stop the fraud or a child can be saved from crime. Hence children should understand the fact for the best future and to save child from the technology of Crime / Death in INDIA by wrong education. In INDIA so many words are there parallel to GOD & many words have been created for one ward to confuse the children and are slaughtered in remote areas for blood / foods / easy money (death).
In the world two types of people are there i.e. one who earn by right way & progress and second is others & some are harmful way to children for blood / food / easy money and children / husbands are slaughtered by the WOMEN who is thirsty for blood of males in remote areas. In INDIA wife are so kind to their Criminal Guru (Wrong Educator) who is thirsty for blood of males and Children / husbands are slaughtered in remote areas for blood / foods / easy money (death) under wrong Education (i.e. 2+2=5….>>) to females. Everybody should think to save children through right education and simple law to save children. The best way everybody should do good work to reach at best world as education in schools and at the time of education in schools and before marriage husband should know in school education / curriculum that he may be slaughtered by wife / her guru (Educator) who is thirsty for blood of males (100% truth like 2+2=4…>>>). Muslims gives male blood from male organ / penis in childhood only.

This is the reason INDIAN SAINTS don’t marry and except the true saints, some saints will help you to reach at Criminal Guru (women, who is thirsty for blood of males & her cruelty on children). Everybody should think & spread regularly, the best way to save children and betterment of all females by contribution of one rupee or donation to educate people to save children by education / competitions / exams for best world. Truth & proper Education before the marriage written above is 100% literacy to save the children from crime / death technology. After death a word is given i.e. terrorist / criminal / freedom fighter / social worker or so many wards are there. Everybody should think to save children by truth education and a automatic & simple law. Anyone die the other person should be shifted where development work for the society / country / World is going on & maintained by government, where male / female will be working separately think to save children / everybody. No links with outsiders because Criminal Guru / Educator (who is involved in separation / death) have such photos / documents & women are compel to do work for Criminal Guru / Women (Educator) who is thirsty for blood of males (death).
