On the Democratic side, I don’t think there was a big surprise about who was going to be in the top three. My predictions had the order stacked in reverse with John Edwards going strong and steady in second place and Hillary Clinton in the first position, though I’m much happier with Barack Obama’s win.
But I have to give some credit to Dennis Kucinich who urged his supporters to stand behind Obama. My fiancé explained the significance of a principled character reference at such a crucial time from a person that we both believe would be the best for America.
She said, “Kucinich is one of the few honest politicians and he’s a lot smarter than I am. If he says I should support Obama, then maybe it’s a good idea.” I agree, and I think the Iowans did too. I just wish Kucinich had a better chance at winning the presidency.
Joe Biden and Chris Dodd dropping out of the race is bittersweet. They are both experienced and intelligent politicians who’ve been around for a long time and still have a lot to offer. That’s why they need to get right back to work in the Senate with a full-throttle nothing-to-lose strategy. Put every option back on the table, call every bluff, exploit every rule, investigate every scandal and punish every obstructionist. One thing I hate about this campaign is how much effort (and money) is wasted strategizing for popularity points instead of fighting for progressive policy that will help the country and repair this badly damaged government.
I believe that Democrats like Joe Biden, Chris Dodd and Dennis Kucinich can open a can of whoop-ass that will rally the base and win the trust of those coveted independents – these people want strong leadership. Each one of them, including Bill Richardson will make great cabinet members and/or future congress leadership later but for now, this is the best way they can help get a Democrat elected.
Mike Gravel… maybe, I’d party with him. The crazy ones always have the good drugs. Other than that, he’s done.
The Republican field is still laughable but Huckabee is actually starting to worry me. The religious right can really get behind a guy like the Huckster. (That was a gay joke)
Romney is destined to run out of money and implode eventually, but he’ll get his own planet when he dies so that’s cool.
Thompson is a corpse, he’s “Weekend At Bernie’s” without the sight gags. Did he really get this far on hype alone?
McCain… see Romney - minus the comment about his own planet. Maybe that baptism he was talking about will help his numbers.
Rudy is in the toilet. It’s time to quit now before inquiries into his past business practices/sex life gets him into real trouble.
As for the moneymaking underdog that is Ron Paul. Though it seems unlikely, I sincerely wish that he were nominated. Not just because I want to see Sean Hannity’s head explode. Because Ron Paul is the only Republican (I use that term loosely, of course) who makes one bit of sense when he opens his mouth and is comfortable stating a concise position on the issues. (Unless he’s talking about shutting down most governmental agencies) The mainstream media hates this guy, but the people love him. So I’m rooting for him.
